In loving Memory of Thomas Duane Smith

It is with great sadness that the Frederick Douglass Foundation announces the unexpected and tragic loss of Thomas Duane Smith, president of our Missouri chapter. Thomas, 46, was found unresponsive Monday afternoon August 9th, due to complications of Covid-19. First responders were unable to revive him. Thomas was a member of the Frederick Douglass Foundation for ten years, where he faithfully served as its Missouri chapter president. Thomas was a devout Christian and committed to truth.

“Thomas was one of our longest serving chapter presidents. whether a prayer meeting, a presidents’ call or a social media debate, Thomas was a proud Frederick Douglass Foundation member. His strong conservative voice and kindness towards all will be missed,” said Rev. Dean Nelson, National Chairman of the Frederick Douglass Foundation.

Thomas had just recently gathered over 150 participants for a Frederick Douglass Foundation event in Kansas City. “Thomas loved FDF and was deeply impressed by the thoughts and ideas of Frederick Douglass, who recognized the world was divided by race but shouldn’t be. He and I shared the idea that our society is fundamentally made of people who need to believe in and find their family in Jesus Christ, and together that is how we achieve unity. I will deeply miss my brother, but his life and work will not be forgotten,” said Letitia Wong, vice president of the Frederick Douglass Foundation of Missouri.

Fearless and diligent to the end, Thomas passed after refusing to quit doing what he loved.  The Frederick Douglass Foundation would like to thank all those who supported him and his work over the years.  His tireless efforts on behalf of our organization will forever be appreciated. Our prayers and condolences are with his loved ones during this time of grieving. Funeral arrangements will be available at the Frederick Douglass Foundation Facebook page when they are announced.
